The Role of Steel Fibres in Concrete Reinforcement

Concrete cracking can be effectively reduced by incorporating steel fibres into the concrete mix. Steel fibres act as micro-reinforcement, mitigating crack formation and controlling crack width. When tensile forces act on the concrete, micro-cracks may develop, but the inclusion of steel fibres bridges these cracks, preventing them from widening and propagating further. This enhances the concrete's tensile and flexural strength, improving its resistance to bending and reducing the likelihood of significant cracking. Furthermore, steel fibres increase the toughness and ductility of the concrete, making it more durable and resistant to dynamic loads and impacts. By restraining volume changes during curing, steel fibres also help minimise drying shrinkage cracks. The selection of the right glass fibres product is based on its crack resistance, tensile, flexural, and compressive strength as per project requirements. STEWOLS INDIA (P) LTD. SHAKTIMAN® Steel Fibres can meet all these requirements.

The unique feature of SHAKTIMAN® Steel Fibres is its 3-dimensional reinforcements as compared to the 2-dimensional reinforcements of conventional steel reinforcement. The 3-dimensional reinforcements  increase the tensile strength of the concrete at both the initial and ultimate crack under flexural loading. It can control even the tiniest of cracks and provide increased load-bearing capacity. It reduces repair and maintenance expenses by offering higher fatigue resistance. The product also minimises deformation while maximising durability.

Different types of SHAKTIMAN® Steel Fibres

steel-fiber

  1. Glued Steel Fibre: These are steel fibres that are coated or bonded with a specific adhesive or coating to enhance their bonding with the concrete matrix. The bonding improves the transfer of stresses between the fibre and the surrounding concrete, resulting in better overall performance.
  2. Hooked End Steel Fibre: These fibres have small hooks or deformations at both ends, which anchor them firmly within the concrete. The hooked ends prevent the fibres from easily pulling out of the concrete matrix, providing improved crack resistance and ductility.
  3. Round Crimped Steel Fibre: These fibres have a wavy or crimped appearance along their length, which increases their surface area and enhances their bond with the concrete. This type of steel fibre is commonly used to improve the flexural and impact strength of concrete.
  4. Flat Crimped Steel Fibre: These fibres have a flattened or ribbon-like shape with crimps along their length. The flat shape provides increased interlocking with the concrete matrix, contributing to improved load-bearing capacity and toughness.

Each type of steel fiber has its specific advantages and applications depending on the desired properties of the reinforced concrete.
